Quadrant three of four

The Delegator

Detached Selective

Some commit on a few trusted signals, others need the full picture. Some need a say, others trust the team to decide. Decision Making is the teamscape dimension that maps this: whether people need to take part in a decision or are happy to let others make it, and whether they decide on key indicators or need the full picture.

The Delegator sits at detached and selective: they trust others to make the decision and keep an eye on a few key signals.

Typical behaviors

  • 01Hands decisions to the people closest to the work and steps back.
  • 02Agrees on a small set of indicators to watch rather than reviewing every detail.
  • 03Steps in only when a key signal moves out of range.
  • 04Is comfortable with decisions they would have made differently, provided the outcome holds.
  • 05Keeps check-ins short and focused on results.

Common language

“You’re closest to it. Your call.”

“Just flag me if this number moves.”

“I trust you to decide.”

“What do you need from me?”

“Let me know how it lands.”

Strengths

Delegators build ownership and speed. Decisions get made where the knowledge is, people grow in confidence, and the Delegator’s attention is freed for what matters most. In teams with capable, experienced members, this approach multiplies what the whole team can get done.

Weaknesses

Watching only a few signals means problems can develop out of view until they show up in the numbers. Team members who want guidance may feel left alone, and others may read the hands-off approach as a lack of interest. Trusting others to decide becomes a limitation when the signals being watched are not the ones that matter.

Questions for your team

  • Which signals tell you a delegated decision is on track?
  • Who on your team wants more guidance than they are getting?

The Deliberator

Read the Deliberator page →

The Deliberator wants to be involved and to see everything before a decision is made. To a Delegator, that can feel like micromanagement or a lack of trust in the team. To a Deliberator, a Delegator’s readiness to step back on a few signals can feel like abdication. Both want good decisions. They disagree about how much involvement it takes to get there.
