We Are All Neurodivergent in Some Ways. So Why Do We Design Work for One "Normal" Brain?

Jan 06, 2026

We keep trying to fix people who work differently. What if we fixed how we design work instead?

Not everyone processes information at the same speed.

Not everyone focuses the same way in an open office.

Not everyone interprets social cues identically.

Not everyone needs the same amount of context to decide.

(If those sentences felt hard to read, you just experienced why negation adds cognitive load for some brains).

And yet most teams operate on hidden assumptions about "normal." Then wonder why some people struggle.

Context: Teams complete a 10-minute Teamscape® assessment that makes preferences visible. It shows how your teams naturally gather information, communicate, solve problems and make decisions.

When you see the diversion of yellow dots on the Teamscape dimensions:

1. You stop assuming one "right" way exists.

"This person processes internally and needs written agendas."

"That person thinks out loud and decides quickly."

Neither is broken.

You simply design for the team you have.

Multiple pathways for meetings, decisions, and communication, rather than one forced format.

2. You reduce pressure to mask.

Someone direct in communication is no longer perceived as "too blunt."

They value clear feedback. Give them specifics, not hints.

The shift: from "fix the person" to "design work that accommodates different ways of working."

Neurodivergent people benefit.

But honestly? So does everyone.
